Botanical Stitch
Drawing inspiration from an herbarium created nearly 40 years ago and my interests in botanical art and traditional hand embroidery, together with the use of textiles as a means of communication, I have created a series of textile botanical art pieces designed to provide information about the identity, anatomy and structure of ancient English Oak Trees. The pieces are used to engage a contemporary audience in considering the significance and ecological value of the English Oak Tree in light of the endangered status of ancient trees.
Rather than concentrate on the exterior of the plant, I have chosen to represent the cellular structure of the oak tree as cells form the the fundamental structures of all living things.
