Alfie Newman is a furniture designer from Herefordshire, UK. With a design philosophy rooted in the values of simplicity, utility, and authenticity; Newman’s work takes aesthetic inspiration from early Modernist art, especially Suprematism and De Stijl. Today we can see the damage done by the unregulated, profit driven, capitalism which Modernism failed to predict; in consideration of this fact, Newman’s work is designed with efficiency and longevity in mind. Inspired by matchsticks and scaffolding, the ND 021 chair (named after Notre-Dame de Paris, and inspired by the recent reconstruction work taking place there) combines industrial form with oak’s organic materiality, creating a feeling of warm brutalism.
