I am a painter who studied at College of Marketing and Design, Dublin. My work is informed by landscape and I enjoy working in mixed media on large formats. I wanted to explore the possibilities of realising work in 3D so throughout this year as an MA student my practice has expanded to incorporate sculpture. I explore contrasts, combining hard and soft surfaces to create work that documents and reflects environment impacts upon terrains and habitats. My processes often employ the layering of textures and colours as grounds, which are then resolved into coherently concluded pieces. I exhibit nationally and work from the Old School Studios in Knighton where I welcome visitors by appointment.
I welcome callers to my studio at The Old School Studios, West Street, Knighton, LD7 1 EN by appointment following social distance guidelines where visitors can see finished work, work in progress, sketchbooks, drawings, prints and cards.
Dystopian River Elders
Mixed media. Dimensions variable. 2020
With the lockdown travel restrictions imposed in March I began to walk the same terrain near my home, collecting found river glass and stoneware fragments. The journey of these found objects became a source of intrigue, a havoc of historical displacement. They gathered over time covering the same beached area, radiating and resonating until I started to visualise them as components pulled towards each other in a kind of magnetic or mercurial flow. The transformational entropy that the forces of water and rock can inflict on these pieces held a residue and these vessels emerged as a strange family of reformed objects.
High Lows, Low Positives
Mixed media on metal screen, perspex and resin. Dimensions variable. 2020
I wanted to reflect ongoing pandemic guidelines by making work about permitted radial walks, perceptions of safe surface materials, loss of family members from within a two-mile radius of my home throughout lockdown.
