Susan Edwards FRSA is a colourist painter.
Her Expressive Figurative paintings explore the interplay between subject matter and the material surface of the canvas.
Using painterly vigorous gestural mark making, she applies paint thinly or sometimes thick rich impasto on the same painting.
Susan seeks in each piece an intuitive response either using subtle or saturated shifts of pure colour, and her working methods include both Plein Air and studio referencing techniques.
Susan’s portraiture is in many collections, including The Royal Hospital, Chelsea; Al Bangart, Boston; Henry Spall, Washington D.C.; Sir Hugh Blackett, Northumberland, and the IMOS Foundation ‘A Portrait for Europe’.
Her Master’s Degree in Fine Art in 2017 focussed on developing a contemporary response to rural landscape painting, and recently one of her landscapes was selected for the New English Art Club Mall Galleries Exhibition.
Her concern for rural landscape as a resource culminated in an h.Art Award and Exhibition in 2018. The Exhibition ‘Shared Ground’ highlighted the need for respect for and conservation of the fantastic natural heritage of our region in particular for our 500 year old Veteran Trees.
With a grant from The Elmely Foundation-‘Herefordshire-A Great Place’, Susan is currently curating and painting for a month long solo show ‘Inspired by Local Heroes’ in the Hereford City Museum and Art Gallery in September 2021. Alongside her landscapes and portraits, in collaboration with The team of Museum’s curators will be works from the Museum’s collection by Dame Laura Knight, John Ward and David Cox.
