There is a growing appreciation of the value of sensual awareness of our physical environment for emotional and psychological wellbeing. We experience calm and clarity of mind through being alert to the details, particularly through touch, because we engage physically as well as visually.
The surface is the point at which we interact through touch with our surroundings. I have recorded the tactile surfaces which form the material blanket of my home, its patterns, textures and colours. This has given me a deeper understanding of our innate need to surround ourselves with materials that satisfy our senses. I found myself wanting to translate these patterns into clay to make them permanent. I have used the form of a sphere because it lends itself to being turned in the hand, cast in porcelain to convey preciousness.
I invite you to explore the pieces through touch to engage more fully than by sight alone.
