Peter Walker

In my work I explore the historic relationship between figurative sculpture and bronze, unpacking how contemporary forged metal practices can illuminate the figure in a fresh light. New material developments have provided blacksmiths with a unique opportunity to reclaim bronze, a material that has otherwise been monopolised by foundry casting processes. Viewing hot metal as a sculpting medium in a traditional sense has allowed me to draw influence from my prior explorations in clay and other mediums. Using bespoke tooling I focus heavily on mark making and the production of facets that are unique to forging processes, in an attempt to re-render the traditional bronze bust in a way that is honest to the practice of contemporary forging. These facets and marks are a visual diary of the transformative process that the work has undertaken, presenting the viewer with a complex facial landscape with which to project or receive emotion.
