Menstrual Healing : Finding Medicine through Cloth and Ritual Practice
This project explores how the ritual use of natural, chemical-free, and above-all beautiful menstrual products can ameliorate the menstrual experience. My work is rooted in my own diagnosis of endometriosis and was brought about by reading how various persistent chemicals that are often found in menstrual products, can aggravate endometriosis symptoms through hormone disruption. I therefore wanted to investigate how creating pads that replace chemical processes and synthetic materials with organic fibres and medicinal, herbal dyes can reduce symptoms and transform the wearers experience. The intention of my work is to be educational, empowering and inclusive; to positively reframe cultural narratives of menstruation and create ritual spaces that allow for intuitive and personal relationships with the products and the natural world around them.
