As a contemporary artist blacksmith forging metal combines my interests in the industrial heritage of Snowdonia and gatherings around the fire to share food and stories. I work with iron and steel using a forge to heat and hammers and anvil to shape.
Influenced by the design and techniques of the blacksmith employed by the quarries and agrarian landscape that’s around my family’s smallholding, I am able to showcase the discovered forged elements in the locality –– the mountainside blacksmith made gates, for example –– and re-purpose these vernacular techniques in my work to create contemporary paraphernalia for cooking over fire or in larger commissions such as gates.
This allows me to convey the elegance of design apparent in the landscape to a wider audience, creating pieces that will last and be enjoyed for many years, an antithesis to the modern throwaway world and becoming part of a wider collection
