Thomas Hancock

Tom’s practice is rooted in process and experimentation, he manipulates existing materials and processes and combines them in ways that elevate them above their accepted status. Working primarily in small batch production runs, Tom creates objects which are similar, but entirely unique.

Drawing influence from traditional craft, engineering and industry to devise unique and innovative production processes, and incorporating techniques most often associated with industrial manufacturing, Tom aims to challenge what can be considered a crafted object.

Tom engages in processes that balance skill and risk to create objects that express the relationship between maker, material, and process. He bends the rules of engineering and manufacturing processes and fuses them with traditional hand crafting skills, such as metal spinning and wood turning. The surface finish that Tom has developed for this collection of vessels is influenced by the automotive paint industry of the 20th century, and the factory amalgamated material known as ‘Fordite’.
